This, from the last restaurant I worked at. The owner, you remember, her son, JR, who didn't want to work, still isn't working, is collecting EI while he thinks about his next big move. I heard a rumour that The Liberal Party had asked him to run for their Federal Cabinet ??? This is beyond stupid. This is the state of the world. No surer way to lose an election than to run the most self-interested, least experienced and invested person you can find.

The owner, she was a smart one. You didn't have to ask, she'd tell you. I got along well enough with her, as donkey's do with the people that give them carrots, and then it was not the time to argue.
She recently posted on Facebook that everyone was misinterpreting Elon Musk's Nazi Salute as a Nazi Salute. That we all needed context. This, not because she believed it, but because her son (candidate for the Liberal Party) is a goose-stepping Musk enthusiast. And if JR is a fan it can't be bad.
I'm presuming you've seen Musk's Sieg Heil, which was followed by a running series of "jokes" on X -

This, coupled with his South African heritage, well...Yeah, sorry R****, that was a Nazi Salute, and he's not ashamed and not even trying to hide it. And that your son is bootlicking Nazi toad, well, you should know, and it's making me think it might be time for you to go for your early Alzheimer's screening.

The children of restaurateurs, almost invariably and without exception, are fucked up. When I worked in Calgary, at the fine Italian place, his children were the half-witted scions of privilege and entitlement, but he knew it, and cut them off from his life. He knew they were idiots, probably suspected his own involvement, but in no way defended them. And in Vancouver, the owner, he knew, but out of respect to Chef (and considerations, no doubt, given to your own employ) nobody mentioned. There was no speaking the quiet part out loud, everybody knew.
But R****, R****, my god, is it Denial? That you are completely unable to see what is perpetually right in front of your face? I mean, I've never met anyone more deluded, less self-aware then yourself, and yet you consistently try and signal that "You're the smart one?" The only good thing that comes out of it all is that if even a quarter of the Nazi Party were as competent/determined/hard working as your son they never would have gotten out of Munich, would have passed out in their cups and been carried home by their mommies and nursed back to health.

I thought of him recently, usually passed him on the street, said "hi", all through the summer...he showed up when I was doing Tarot readings (here: https://rodboyle.com/index.php/archives/blog/tarot-on-baker-etc), hadn't seen him for a while...He was the Grandpa Simpson Character. Always polite, chatty, up for a talk.
Apparently passed away. Not a surprise, when I think of people I haven't seen for a while that's usually why.
What caused me to think of him was the latest missing person reported in Nelson: https://www.nelsonstar.com/local-news/nelson-police-seek-missing-man-7741101, whom I half-think I recognize as the "Blue Eyed Samurai" ... I wrote about it, then deleted, Stalker problems. Didn't want to cause any harm - my opinion of him being irrelevant to who he is.
But - if it's the same person (and looks - a bit - to be) he disappeared a short while after my last posting (wherein he came into the restaurant and had his own private rave party and then proved unable to pay his bill). I'm not sure it's him.
Anyways, I recognized I hadn't seen him in a while, and the photo jarred me - I've met him, for sure, and - it's tough to know, a lot of the homeless people here, they come from out of town, just to hang out, party, then disappear the same way, only to show up a few months later on a missing person's list. Who knows where they went after here (if anywhere?).
And this stream of associations brought me on to a few of the other local missing persons cases, many of whom we know - roughly - what might have happened, only lacking the bodies or proof, but there's a curious one that still intrigues me:

Which gives no follow up (none that I ever found) as to what passed in his 2 month's before finding. Was he already dead? Hiding out? The lack of answers makes one only the more curious.

Anyways, for a town so small we pack well above our weight in missing people/unsolved murders/disappearances. David Lynch Territory for sure.

...and I just heard - via Facebook, of one of our more charming homeless local's unfortunate demise. B*****, met her some 6 or so years ago, just becoming an addict. An abortion she didn't want and no ability to process the trauma.
When I met her she was housed, then soon enough not, always pleasant, usually after a fashion sober - but her habits were probably more nocturnal and done away from the madding crowds and main streets. A victim, one of three, a couple of weeks ago, the "bad batch" the police posted a warning about.
You'd run into her, in the niche in the alley outside my back door, sweeping it out, organizing the trash, pulling weeds, setting up house for a few hours. Notes written on signboards to her. She was pretty and popular.
So to read of her death was a bit of a shock, no obituary, but the street agencies did a celebration of life for her, and the comments on Facebook, almost a hundred, all kind. A decent person laid low by circumstance and trauma.
The other two, I don't know, maybe locals but I've heard nothing, there are so many itinerant homeless on the streets that it's hard to say, did they move on, or did they become statistics? I should start volunteering at the soup kitchen, it would keep me more in the loop...
